The missions
The CRIOBE has fixed it-self 3 Goals :
- To be an observatory of the South Pacific coralline ecosystem,
- To be a reception and promotion centre for the habitat research and South Pacific insular societies,
- To enhance communication and popularization of the coralline ecosystem who’s also an expert on coralline habitat environment questions.
The details :
- The South Pacific coralline ecosystem observatory. The main objective of such an observatory is the acquisition of physic or biologic systems long term knowledge. As a biological observatory, the aim is a better comprehension of ecosystem regulation and ecological proceses through-out long periods of time. As a matter of fact, only long series of measures collected by characteristic variables network allow the description and evolution of natural or disrupted systems showing significant seasonal or inter-annual variability.
- The reception and accompaniment functions for national and international research programs conducted in Polynesia and in the Pacific. In this context, the CRIOBE is an important reception base for researchers, professors involved into reserch , engineers, technicians or students who wish to develop research programs in the insular South Pacific. During the last couple of years, the CRIOBE received international programs such as BIOCODE, BIOAQUA, PERDUR, LT ER-MOOREA, CRISP and others ( smaller scale programs ).
- The CRIOBE has a significant role as a communication and trainings. . Communication concerns press articles and scientific popularization (ou awareness rising). Moreover the CRIOBE welcomes every year Phd student for their tropical ecology initiations and trainings on monitoring techniques starting off in the South Pacific. In other respects, CRIOBE operates as an expert in the tropical ecology field to the French Polynesia ministries, but also for some South Pacific regional institutions (PROE, CPS) or internationals (GCRMN of ICRI, International Coral Reef Initiative etc.).
