COCONET

Projet: Towards Coast to Coast Networks of Marine Protected Areas (from the shore to high and deep sea), Coupled with Sea-Based Wind Energy Potential

Coconet

Coordinateur: Serge Planes

Periode: 2012-2016

Zone d’Études: Europe+

Résumé: COCONET is a partnership between 32 universities, research institutions, managers, industry and community organizations spanning 22 countries that are working together to enhance the protection and management of coastal and offshore marine areas across the Mediterranean and Black Seas. One of COCONET’s primary objectives is to expand Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in the Mediterranean and Black Seas, both in size and scope, to ensure the long-term sustainability of marine ecosystems and their associated benefits to people. To do this, existing small-scale MPAs will be incorporated into a much larger network of MPAs. These new regional networks, which will then be included in an even larger network of networks, will also include new MPAs selected for their physical, biological and socioeconomic factors.

Within the MPA planning process, COCONET partners will also identify areas suitable for the establishment of new offshore wind farms. Wind farms are an important Clean Energy Production (OFW) tool and if designed appropriately, can deliver significant benefits to people across the European Union and beyond. To test the viability of current theoretical approaches, COCONET partners will conduct two pilot projects - one in the Mediterranean Sea and one in the Black Sea. Ultimately, our goal is to produce an enhanced wind atlas for the Mediterranean and Black Seas, that will help decision makers make informed decisions about how to maximize benefits and minimize negative impacts of wind as a source of clean energy.

Through this partnership, it is our hope that relationships formed between scientists and practitioners working across the Mediterranean and Black Seas will persist and can serve as a permanent network of experts for the European Union, who can champion the ongoing management, monitoring and effectiveness of these and other vital marine ecosystems across Europe.

Collaborateurs: 39 partenaires issus de 22 pays (Italie, France, Espagne, Grèce, Tunisie, Israël, Turquie, Maroc, Croatie, Albanie, Malte, Monténégro, Belgique, Danemark, Roumaine, Bulgarie, Ukraine, Royaume-Uni, Géorgie, Norvège, Russie, Allemagne)

CoCoNET Documentary Film
As a part of the outreach program, a 30-min documentary film on CoCoNet was produced and directed by Roberto Rinaldi. It features Marine Protected Areas, ecosystem functioning, and offshore wind farms, with beautiful and colorful footage of both the Mediterranean and Black Seas.
